The Natural Methods of Preventing or Achieving Pregnancy
(click here for upcoming class schedule)

Natural Family Planning (NFP) is an effective method for preventing or achieving pregnancy. There are no harmful drugs or devices involved. And NFP is in no way related to the 'Rhythm" method. It simply and naturally puts a woman in touch with her own fertility by teaching her how to recognize, record and understand the physical changes caused by hormones present during fertility.

Perhaps best of all, NFP fosters commitment in couples to work together and share in meeting their family goals.

"In 16 years of using NFP, we would be hard pressed to find a greater gift to our married love. Perhaps this is the reason it's often referred to by couples practicing NFP as the 'Best kept secret of the Catholic Church.'"
- Al Covey

The Natural Methods of Family Planning...

- Are easy to learn and apply.
- Are proven by scientific and medical research.
- Include instruction in observing three primary fertility signs. Each of these signs can be used alone or in combination with each other.

- Allows the couple to share in the responsibility for planning their family
- Are accepted by all religious denominations
- Can be used by all women, whatever their individual pattern may be at any stage of their reproductive lives.
- Involve no additional expense after the initial instruction.

The Ovulation Method (Billings Method)

This method allows a woman to recognize day by day where she is in her menstrual cycle - when she's fertile and when she is infertile. Mucus discharge and its detectable change is the key to fertility awareness. When she is taught to observe the changes in her mucus, a woman can determine her state of fertility. The mucus is the medium through which sperm is conducted to or prohibited from entering the uterus.

The Ovulation Method can be used during the reproductive years for women:
- with regular or irregular cycles
- with cycles without ovulation
- after childbirth; when breast or bottle feeding
- when approaching menopause
- when coming off the pill
- for pinpointing times of maximum fertility in cases of low fertility

Basal Body Temperature

When a woman ovulates, her waking body temperature rises to a sustained high level, taking the temperature by mouth with a basal thermometer for a few days of the cycle will confirm when ovulation occurs. This method, however must be used in conjunction with the mucus changes in order to be effective.

Changes in the Cervix

As a woman's fertile phase begins, her cervix changes to receive sperm entering the uterus. NFP teaches the proper way to detect those changes and interpret them correctly.

"Natural Family Planning is a gift of life for life."
- Lynn Wood

Learning the Methods

Natural Family Planning is easily learned. It is critical, however, that the methods be taught correctly and the woman's initial progress be observed by Certified NFP Instructors. We urge you to seek a reliable program for NFP instruction.

The 3 natural methods of family planning when used correctly and together are 99.6% effective if pregnancy needs to be prevented.

For couples of low fertility in need of assistance in achieving a pregnancy, NFP can be highly effective.

"Many people see sexuality as used in opposition to God. Natural Family Planning invites God into a loving and caring relationship."
- Lynn Wood
