Edmundite Father Paul G. McQuillen

Edmundite Father Paul G. McQuillen, 65, died Jan. 11 in Montgomery, Ala.

The son of George J. McQuillen Sr. and Mary G. (Harrington) McQuillen, he was born on May 25, 1950, in Winthrop, Mass. He was a professed member of the Society of St. Edmund for 42 years and an Edmundite priest for 38 years.

In 1972, Father McQuillen graduated cum laude from St. Michael's College in Colchester, receiving a degree in psychology. He made his first profession of vows in 1973.

He completed his master's degree in theology at the University of St. Michael's College in Toronto in 1976. He also received a master's degree in formative spirituality from Duquesne University in Pittsburg in 1980.

On May 7, 1977, Burlington Bishop John A. Marshall ordained Father McQuillen at the Chapel of St. Michael the Archangel at St. Michael's College. Following ordination to the priesthood,

Father McQuillen began his priestly duties as assistant pastor at the Church of the Nativity in Swanton until 1979. He served as director and assistant director of novices at the Edmundite Apostolate Center in Mystic, Conn., from 1980 until 1989.

Father McQuillen ministered at St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Marrero, La., from 1990 until 2007, becoming pastor in 1992. During 2003 and 2004, he also served as president of Bishop Perry Middle School in New Orleans. From 2008 until 2009, he began an Edmundite Evangelization Initiative, developing Retreat Ministry in Selma, Ala.

Father McQuillen served as pastor of St. Jude Church in Montgomery, Ala., from 2009 to the present.

Along with his Edmundite brothers, he is survived by his brothers, George J. McQuillen Jr. and his wife, Barbara; Kenneth M. McQuillen and his wife, Anne; and Mark S. McQuillen and his wife, Flora; and many nieces and nephews.

On Jan. 15 at St. Jude Church in Montgomery, a funeral Mass was celebrated; interment followed at Fairlawn Memorial Cemetery in Selma.
