Vermont Catholic Youth Serve and Shine Missions — Introduction

We are delighted to share with you an amazing opportunity this coming August — Shine Missions, a national organization that sponsors weeks of service throughout the United States, is coming to Burlington!  The event will be headquartered at Rice Memorial High School, and then groups of teens and young adults will fan out throughout the community to serve those in need – particularly the homeless, elderly and needy.  We will be partnering with numerous organizations throughout the great Chittenden County area.  Finally, they are expecting close to 100 teens, including teens from as far away as Wisconsin and Virginia, as well as a group from Martha’s Vineyard.

Details:

August 5-10 with Rice Memorial High School as home base

Basic Schedule — Click Here

Basics:

Teens and adults will stay overnight at Rice (sleeping on floors with bed rolls, air mattresses, etc.) and then fan out into the community to serve the elderly, poor and needy.  We will be partnering with organizations throughout Chittenden County.

Cost:

$350 (includes all meals as well as the program).   There may be financial aid available at your local parish, or please contact the office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry at wgavin@vermontcatholic.org if finances are an issue.  SHINE has made it clear they do not anyone NOT to participate because of financial constraints.

Registration:

To register, please fill out the registration form found here:

For teens who are rising 9th grade through high school — Click here

For those 18 – 20 click here

For chaperones and adults click here

Submit $350 payment to the Diocese of Burlington — 55 Joy Drive, South Burlington, Vermont 05403

Typical day:

Will include service, free time for fun and relaxation, but also dynamic evening programs that will be fun, but also inspirational and prayerful.

Who?

Open to all high school teens, as well as rising 9th graders.

Important!

This is NOT a drop off program.  We are putting together a Diocesan ‘group’ and will need chaperones.

Another note: this event is open to young adults in college as well – young adults will stay in a separate section, but participate with everyone else (thus not attending as chaperones per se – those who are in the 18-22 range).

We are asking parishes to please consider several key things:

  1. Promoting this event and organizing a group to attend
  2. Finding Safe and Sacred/Virtus trained adults to attend as chaperones
  3. Financially supporting SHINE by offering to cover a certain percentage to anyone attending
  4. Supporting and encouraging fundraising efforts to help defray the cost – if you need ideas, don’t hesitate to ask.
  5. If you are local to Burlington, we need help pinpointing service locations (including individual elderly or needy individuals or families).
  6. Cars/vehicles will be needed for transporting participants.
