In 2014, 21 percent of Vermonters said they do not believe in God. That was the highest by far of any state. But what do modern atheists and agnostics typically mean by the word "God"? What has the Judeo-Christian tradition meant by the opening words of the Nicene Creed: "I believe in God"? What kind of God are we talking about? Talk given by Anthony Rosselli. --- Series: What is Catholicism? -- Each Thursday at 7pm from October 2019 through…

The Old Testament can be unsettling. The popular atheist Richard Dawkins even described the God of the Old Testament as “a petty, unjust, unforgiving control freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser.” Does Dawkins have it right? How have Jews and Christians interpreted the sometimes bizarre depictions of God in the Old Testament? What are we to make of what Pope Benedict XVI called the “dark passages of the Bible”? Talk will be given by Anthony Rosselli. --- Series: What is…

The story of Noah and the Flood is one of the Bible’s strangest. The hearts of all were said to be “always nothing but evil” and so God decided to “blot out man… from the face of the ground… for he was sorry that he had made them” (Gen 6:5-6). It’s an unsettling passage! What is the meaning of this Flood? Who is Noah and why is he exempt? How have Christians and Jews understood this story? Talk given by…

Abraham is considered the “father” ― the first ancestor ― of Jews and Christians. Indeed, a host of promises were made to Abraham and his family. Do these promises have anything to do with us today? And why, if God loves him so, did God ask Abraham to kill his son? What could this story possibly mean? Talk given by Anthony Rosselli, PhD cand. --- Series: What is Catholicism? -- Each Thursday @ 7pm from October 2019 through April 2020,…

Moses’ story is one of the Old Testament’s most fascinating and memorable. The burning bush; the ten plagues; the flight through the Red Sea. These stories have even found their way into Hollywood depictions. But what did the ancient Jews and Christians think these stories meant? What did God mean when he bizarrely told Moses his name was “I AM”? What are we to make of these famous plagues? Talk given by Anthony Rosselli, PhD cand. --- Series: What is…
