Cousin of Crazy Horse and subject of the famous book, "Black Elk Speaks," Nicholas Black Elk became a Catholic in 1904. As a catechist he is credited with bringing over 400 people to the Faith. In 2017, the Vatican authorized his cause for canonization. Dr. Damian Costello is a vice-postulator of Black Elk's cause for canonization and the author of "Black Elk: Colonialism and Lakota Catholicism." He is a member of St. Augustine Parish in Montpelier.

In the third of our Series on the Saints, Monsignor Peter Routhier will give a presentation on Brother Dutton of Stowe, Vermont, whose cause for canonization is now being considered. He spent many years with St. Damien, working with the lepers on the island of Molokai, Hawaii. His life is depicted in artwork found in the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Stowe.

In his 2015 visit to the US, Pope Francis named Dorothy Day as one of four "Great Americans" named in his speech to Congress. This new documentary explores the life, the faith, and the ministry of this extraordinary woman who devoted herself to the ideals of Catholic social teaching and the Preferential Option for the Poor. She is currently under consideration for sainthood. Essex Catholic Community is pleased to present this film as part of our "Series on the Saints."

Essex Community Dinners are provided in order to grow /promote our community! They are intended to feed the hungry, lonely and needy amongst us. These meals are free to all but donations to cover parish expenses are appreciated. In person dining starts at 5:30PM at Holy Family Parish Hall on the Second Friday of each Month. Take out dinners are also available for those who still need to avoid crowds.
