The Society of Saint Edmund – the order of Catholic priests and brothers that founded Saint Michael’s College in Vermont and the Edmundite Southern Missions in Selma, Alabama – has elected a new administration to oversee the Society’s activities over the next four years.
The Society of Saint Edmund was founded in Pontigny, France, in the mid-19th century. The order of priests and brothers came to Vermont via Canada in the late 19th century, establishing Saint Michael’s College right after the turn of the century.
The Society meets every four years to set its agenda and, if needed, elect new leadership. At the meeting in June 2026, Fr. David Theroux ’70, S.S.E., was elected Superior General of the Society of Saint Edmund. He succeeds former Superior General Fr. David Cray ’68, S.S.E. Theroux will serve a four-year term with the possibility of a second four-year term.
Theroux is also currently the inaugural Vice President of the Division of Edmundite Mission at Saint Michael’s College, which oversees the College’s Campus Ministry, community service organization Mobilization of Volunteer Efforts, and the Institute for Equity and Justice.
The Superior General is advised by an elected General Council on all matters related to the Society’s activities and finances. Recently elected members to the Council include:
  • First Councilor: Fr. Brian Cummings ’86, S.S.E.
  • Second Councilor: Fr. Michael Carter ’12, S.S.E.
  • Third Councilor: Fr. Richard Berube ’68, S.S.E.
  • Fourth Councilor: Fr. Thomas Hoar ’74, S.S.E.
