On October 5, 2025 the Vermont Knights of Columbus State Council, under the leadership of State Deputy Christopher Poirier, held its 38th Annual Anchor Award Ceremony at the East Side Restaurant and Pub in Newport. The event, attended by 85 Knights and guests, honored Theresa McAvinney of St. Andre Bessette Parish in Troy for her lifelong dedication to faith, service, and community.

The Anchor Award recognizes an individual, clergy or layperson, Knight or non-member, who exemplifies selfless service for the betterment of humanity and the Holy Mother Church.

Accepting the award on Theresa’s behalf were her husband Daniel McAvinney, daughters Melissa LeBlanc and Lori Strauss, and her brother Louis Leonelli.

Theresa never sought personal recognition and would have humbly said she was simply “doing what God was asking her to do.” She found great joy in singing to give glory to God, and in her devotion to the Holy Mass and teaching the faith, which she regarded as both a fulfilling and prayerful calling.

State Deputy Christopher Poirier said that “this was a wonderful and inspirational evening honoring a great woman who spent her life serving the Catholic Church and the needs of those in her community.”
