Schola Christmas Performance

SWANTON—On Monday, Dec. 19, at 7:30 p.m. Dr. William Tortolano’s Schola Christmas Performance will take place at Nativity Church.
 
Tortolano, St. Michael’s College organist emeritus and fine arts/music professor emeritus, will conduct the Vermont Gregorian Chant Schola (a men’s vocal group) He is a 50-year teaching veteran at the college where he founded the St. Michael’s College Chorale in 1970. He was recipient of the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice honor from Pope Benedict for his contribution to Gregorian chant and conducts the Vermont Gregorian Chant Schola. Founded 15 years ago by Tortolano, the schola has given more than 100 concerts and sacred services in New England, Quebec and on public television. 
 
A free will offering will be taken at the performance.

Poster contest

FAIRFIELD—The Knights of Columbus St. Albans Council #297 is sponsoring a “Keep Christ in Christmas” poster contest. All boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 14 are invited to participate. Posters should reflect the “Keep Christ in Christmas” theme. Posters must be submitted by Dec. 18. Posters and with the completed participant registration form can be dropped off at St. Patrick Rectory. Prizes will be awarded to the winners in each age division and their posters will be forwarded for inclusion in state and national/International competitions.
 

Nativity Play and Carol Sing

WILLISTON—There will be a Nativity Play and Carol Sing Dec. 18 at 1 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 7415 Williston Road. The Nativity play will be told with scripture and song. There will be a carol sing after the play. This will be followed by cookies, cocoa and cider. For more information, call 802-318-2422.

BURLINGTON--Barb Heath, Mater Christi School band director, and Lori Marino, music teacher, recently announced the names of the students who have qualified to participate in the Champlain Valley District III Music Festival.
           
They are:
Instrumental: Sara Beth Marroquin, saxophone; Erik Linseisen, saxophone: Michael Harrington, Euphonium baritone; Ben Harrison, percussion; Isabel Stearns, viola; Jack Rutz, trombone; Ben Hershey, trumpet; George Huffman, cello; and Helen Argraves, cello.
 
Chorus:  Marina Prikis, Juliette Hassenberg and Deena Jacunski.
 
The Vermont District Music Festival will take place on Jan. 28 at the A. D. Lawton School in Essex Junction at 2 p.m.

RICHFORD—The Richford Community Festival of Lessons and Carols will take place at All Saints Church on Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 6 p.m.
 

Food Shelf Sundays

STOWE-- Every Sunday at Blessed Sacrament Church is Food Shelf Sunday. Donations are collected at Mass for the Lamoille Community Food Share.
 

Rice Thanksgiving baskets

SOUTH BURLINGTON—Students and members of the Rice Memorial High School community helped 21 families have a happier Thanksgiving this year by providing them with baskets of food for a Thanksgiving meal.
 
They also engaged in a bit of competition with first place basket awarded to religion teacher Patrick Welsch’s class for a Snoopy "basket,” and second place going to History teacher Christian Frenette's class. Third place went to religion teacher Marti Burt's class.
 
Every first-period class was responsible for putting together the fixings for a Thanksgiving meal. Students are encouraged to be creative in their presentation and often go above and beyond what is asked. 
 

Nativity play

RICHFORD—The All Saints Nativity Play and Parish Christmas Party will take place on Sunday, Dec. 18, beginning at 10:30 a.m. with a Youth Mass. At 11:45 a.m. the Nativity play will take place, followed by a pizza luncheon, games and crafts. Bring a dessert to share.
 
Pinard check
GENEROUS GIFT--Vermont Catholic Charities Inc. is grateful to Winooski Chapter #35 of Catholic Financial Life for its generous gift to the Annual Advent Appeal.  Mary Beth Pinard, executive director of Catholic Charities accepts the check from George and Jacqueline Bouffard. The gift will be used to help Vermonters in need of assistance during this Christmas season.
